Botanical Gardens Tour

The Botanical Gardens house one of the most extensive collections of tropical flora within the Caribbean region and is home to the National Zoo which has a wide variety of tropical and amazonas species. It was landscaped over a period of thirty-five years by Americans - John Fredrica Waby and G.S Jenman, after their arrival here in 1878. It is the most frequently visited birding place in Georgetown and almost in the heart of the capital. This garden inhabits over 180 species of birds which fluctuates according to season.

One of the highlights of this tour is the Festive Parrot (Amazona festiva bodini) which was recorded in 1949 by Dorothy E. Synder in first checklist f birds of Guyana which had 720 which was published in 1966. Since then it has become a rare bird until a pair was recorded in 2005 by Gajendra Narine (Andy). The botanical gardens host the only existing population in Guyana. It is one of the five Amazonas species.
