Guyana's National Bird Tour

A forty- five minute drive from Georgetown takes you to the Mahaica River, where we will begin birding by boat. This is one of the few areas where large populations of the bizarre looking bird Hoatzin- Guyana’s national Bird can be easily seen living in groups along the river. It’s a beautiful area for birders and non-birders to explore.

Mahaica River runs north to south with habitats made up of mangrove gallery forest, Moco Moco and open grassland, beyond the banks of Mahaica are cultivated lands of rice and cash crop. Over 150 species are recorded along the river. Other species such as the Black Hawk-Eagle, Wing-barred Seedeater, Silver-backed Antbird, Green-rumped Parrotlet and Boat-billed Heron are often seen here.
